Swedish Massage Massage: Aftercare Checklist for the First 24 Hours

Swedish Massage - 60 Min | $105

After your Swedish massage in our quiet, comfortable space with soft jazz in the background, the most important rule is simple: slow down and hydrate. Give your body at least a full day to settle into the work we just did. You’ll usually leave feeling very relaxed, but your muscles are still processing those long strokes (effleurage) that help circulation and ease tension.
Your first 2 hours in Roslindale: rest first, then re-enter your day
We generally recommend you treat the first 1 to 2 hours like a cool-down. Sip water, move slowly, and avoid jumping right into anything intense. If you’re heading back toward the Roslindale MBTA station, give yourself a few extra minutes before that walk so you’re not rushing with wobbly “massage legs.”
Quick checklist (first 2 hours): Drink water, have a light snack if you’re hungry, and keep plans low-key. Skip saunas, very hot baths, and long heat exposure right away.
The rest of the first 24 hours
- Skip heavy workouts and heavy lifting. Light walking is great. A calm stroll near the Arnold Arboretum is perfect.
- Hold off on alcohol. Alcohol can dehydrate you and make post-massage soreness feel worse.
- Eat normally. You don’t need anything special, just steady meals and a bit of extra water.
- Pay attention to the “good sore” versus “not right” feeling. Mild tenderness can happen. Sharp pain is a different story.
If you’re booking around school pick-up or squeezing a session in before an evening plan, this is the one place to be strict. Give your body a quiet 24 hours and you’ll usually get a better, longer-lasting reset.
Day 2 through day 7: keep the relaxed feeling, don’t “re-tighten” everything
Swedish massage uses long strokes in the direction of blood flow toward the heart. It’s designed to relax your whole system and support circulation. The week after, your job is to not undo that with a sudden spike in stress or intensity.
Keep movement gentle at first, then build back up. Desk-bound commuters in and around Roslindale often notice neck and shoulder tightness creeping back when they go right back to hours of hunching. Try a simple pattern: short stretch breaks, a little extra water, and one focused posture check each hour.
Roslindale summer note (hot, humid July)
In humid weather, people often feel “fine” but are quietly dehydrated. After massage, that tends to show up as a headache or heavy fatigue later in the day. Add an extra glass of water, and take a break in the shade if you’re walking the Farmers Market.
If you live a little farther out, like Jamaica Plain, West Roxbury, Hyde Park, Dorchester, Milton, or Brookline, plan your travel time so you’re not speed-walking and tense right after your appointment.
Soreness after a 60-minute Swedish massage: what helps fast
Feeling relaxed right after is common. Some people also feel a little tender later, especially if we spent time on knots in the shoulders or low back. That tenderness usually eases within a day or two.
Warmth for tight spots
A warm shower usually does the trick. A heating pad can feel great on stubborn tight areas. Keep it comfortable, not scalding.
Gentle stretching, not aggressive stretching
Think easy neck turns, shoulder rolls, and slow breathing. If it hurts, back off. You’re aiming for “looser, ” not “deep.”
Ice only if there’s swelling
If you notice swelling or fresh inflammation, use a cold pack briefly. For simple muscle tightness, warmth tends to feel better.
And yes, you can go back to work after a Swedish massage. People do it all the time. Just try not to stack your day with stressful meetings right after if you can help it.
When to reach out to our team (and when to get medical care)
We check in during sessions because pressure should feel helpful, not alarming. If something feels off after you leave, let us know. People come to us for stress relief, for tension they can’t shake, and for those back and shoulder areas that keep acting up. We want your 60 minutes to actually carry into the rest of your week.
"Quiet and comfortable space. Great soft jazz music during the massage. I was very relaxed and can’t wait to return!"
one of our regulars
Red flags: don’t “wait it out”
- Persistent sharp pain
- New numbness or tingling that doesn’t fade
- Visible swelling, fever, or unusual bruising
- Anything that feels dramatically worse, not better
If any of those show up, reach out to us and seek medical care as needed.
If you’re curious about how Swedish massage works and what it’s best for, these two posts pair well with this aftercare checklist: benefits and expectations for Swedish massage and Swedish massage for stress relief.
Need help planning your next session?
Tell us what you’re feeling in your neck, shoulders, back, or hips, and what your week looks like. We’ll help you pick the right timing so you can actually enjoy that post-massage calm.
